One community project that continues to receive time,
attention, and funding is the Pitner Park Project.
High winds took their toll on the park several years ago. Since most of
the mature trees were reaching their
life-expectancy, several organizations joined forces to coordinate the project
with the
Village Board and the Financial/Grant Committee of the former Stratton Community
Development
Organization (now the Stratton Area Chamber of Commerce, Inc.) and the
Stratton Community Foundation.
Work continues to take place on landscaping projects
and an underground sprinkler system is
being considered to help maintain the park.
Recent improvements include:
A total of forty trees were planted, and flowerbeds with native grasses, roses,
and assorted flowers
were recently added. Six new picnic tables along with B-B-Q pits, and
numerous trash bins were placed throughout the park. These items were purchased through
individual memorial
contributions.
In addition to these funds and improvements, a grant was
obtained for the addition of
sidewalks throughout the park, and an educational center, illustrating the
different native grasses and
types of trees will also be implemented into the design of the new park.
Bronze plaques have been placed
near each tree, table, and bench illustrating the memorial gifts. Plaques
will soon be placed to
identify each different type of flower and grass.
Some of the new trees planted include Burr Oak, Canadian Red
Cherry, Spruce, Indian Magic Crabtree,
Autumn Purple Ash, and many others. These new trees are sure to provide
visitors with a beautiful
place to relax and play no matter the season!
